The Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from some parts of west Rajasthan, which is three days before its normal schedule of September 17, said India Meteorological Department. The monsoon retreat from some more parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Gujarat is expected in next few days.
Western Rajasthan has received 75 per cent surplus rains since June 1 and the rainfall was only 0.1 mm against normal of 4.9 mm during September 11-14.
“Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of south west monsoon from some more parts of Rajasthan and some parts of Punjab and Gujarat during next 2-3 days,” IMD said in a statement Sunday.
After fulfilment of withdrawal criteria, IMD declared the starting date on Sunday. There is an anti-cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan at 1.5 km above mean sea level and no rainfall over the region during last consecutive 5 days, it said.
“Also, there has been reduction in moisture content of the atmosphere over the region upto middle troposphere. The line of withdrawal of monsoon passes through Sri Ganganagar, Nagaur, Jodhpur, Barmer,”it said.
According to IMD data, the country, as a whole, has received 846.3 mm rainfall, so far, which is 7 per cent above the long period average (LPA) of 790.1 mm. The east and north-east meteorological subdivision has received 20 per cent deficit rainfall, the north-west subdivision 32 per cent above normal, Central India 11 per cent surplus and southern peninsula 8 per cent higher than normal rainfall between June 1 and September 14, IMD said.
The monsoon had covered the entire country on June 29 this year, which is nine days earlier than its normal schedule and the quickest in last five years. The onset of monsoon over Kerala coast was on May 24, which is the earliest since 2009. The normal onset date over Kerala is June 1.
