As Cipla clocks its 90th year next month, Chairman YK Hamied hopes to “continue along the same path” of providing accessible and quality products, for India and across the world.
The year marked a “significant milestone”, the Cipla doyen told shareholders reflecting on his “long and productive” association with the drugmaker. “The 65 years that I have spent actively in Cipla since 1960 has been the most rewarding experience,” he added. Looking ahead, the company would focus on respiratory, cardiac, cancer, obesity and mental health segments, among others, besides the critical area of anti-microbials, he said, at Cipla’s 89th annual general meeting. “Cipla continues to be among the leading generic pharmaceutical companies, not only in India, but also in Africa, USA, Europe and has a growing presence in selected markets around the world,” he said.
He also pointed to Cipla’s Palliative Care and Training Centre (Pune), that started in 1997 and supported over 25,000 patients and their families. Palliative care services have since expanded to over 30 cities in India, he added.
Cash deployment
Fielding shareholder queries, Cipla Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer Umang Vohra said, the company had a diversified pipeline and supply-chain to weather US President Trump’s proposed tariffs. The manufacturing was distributed between the US, India and the rest of the world, he said.
Vohra reiterated Cipla’s focus areas and pointed to the company’s work in biosimilars, mRNA, among others. The next few months will see greater activity in the diabetes and obesity segment, including GLP-1 products, he said. The company was looking to invest about ₹2,000 crore annually in capacity expansion, through internally generated funds. Having clocked its highest revenues at Rs 27,548 crore, and with ₹10,000 crore cash on its books, he said, it would be deployed in science and technology that would enhance its research platform. With operations across prescription, generics and customer care, he said, the company’s facilities had undergone about 100 audits, mostly with satisfactory outcomes.
