While franchise movies have done well in the past, what’s been a surprise for industry observers is the success of films like F1: The Movie and Final Destination Bloodlines at the Indian box office

Hollywood flicks are having a great run at the Indian box office. Three Hollywood films, F1: The Movie, Superman and Jurrasic World Rebirth have been dominating the domestic box office in recent days reflecting the growing salience of international content in the country. This comes after a gap which was mired by weaker Hollywood content pipeline.

Take for instance: American superhero flick, Superman whichgarnered net collections of ₹26.30 crore in the first three days of its release. Jurassic Park Rebirth, a well known franchise movie has netted about ₹78 crore in the first 12 days. Meanwhile, F1: The Movie has netted ₹71 crore in the first 18 days on the domestic box office. The success of these three flicks comes close on the heels of Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning grossing over ₹115 crore in May.

In his recent post on X, Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted: ”It’s a hat-trick. Hollywood films strike gold. #F1TheMovie, #JurassicWorldRebirth, and #Superman — the three #Hollywood biggies that released in quick succession — are dominating the #Indian #Boxoffice, proving to be tough competitors for #Hindi films. Only reaffirms the growing influence and pull of #Hollywood content in the #Indian market.(sic).”

While franchise movies have done well in the past, what’s been a surprise for industry observers is the success of films like F1: The Movie and Final Destination Bloodlines at the Indian box office. Producer and film business expert Girish Johar said, “This shows Indian consumers are evolving. Post Covid, we had begun seeing consumers only come out to watch tentpole films. But the success the recent Hollywood films have seen at the Indian box office indicates that Indian consumers are returning to watching film content habitually if the stories resonate with them.”

For the multiplex chains, the success of Hollywood flicks comes at a time when Hindi movies have also begun seeing steady recovery at the box office collections. “Hollywood has made a roaring comeback at the Indian box office. With blockbuster titles like Superman, FI and Jurassic World releasing in quick succession, we’ve seen energy and excitement return to pre-Covid levels — both in footfalls and collections. These films have reaffirmed the strength of theatrical storytelling and reminded audiences of the unmatched experience of cinema. While Indian titles continue to perform strongly, the recent Hollywood wave has shown that when the content connects, language or geography doesn’t matter. We see this as a strong indicator of a well-balanced and thriving film calendar ahead,” said Kamal Gianchandani, Chief Business Planning & Strategy, PVR INOX Ltd.

As per Ormax Media, Hollywood films contributed 8 per cent to overall gross box office collections between January-May period.
