Extremely heavy rain has been recorded over the Gujarat Region (eastern portion of the State across Valsad, Surat, Bharuch and Vadodara) during the 24 hours ending on Friday as a well marked low-pressure area lay over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining east Rajasthan that India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects to intensify as a monsoon depression by Sunday.
The period also saw heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region and Chhattisgarh at isolated places over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra across the region, as also over rest of the country over Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, hills of West Bengal, Sikkim, and Kerala and Mahe.
Enhanced rain outlook
Prospects of further heavy rain is enhanced over West and North-West India from an upper air cyclonic circulation over north-east Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast and a trough that runs from here to north-west Bay of Bengal across Saurashtra; south Gujarat; and the well-marked ‘low’ pressure area over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining East Rajasthan. In addition, an incoming western disturbance lurked along south-west Pakistan, aiming to cross the border to enter West Rajasthan.
This apart, core monsoon trough passed through Jaisalmer; centre of the well-marked ‘low’ over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining east Rajasthan; Sidhi; Daltonganj; and Digha before dipping south-eastwards into east-central Bay of Bengal. A lone upper air cyclonic circulation hung over north-east Assam and neighbourhood.
Exceptional rain warned
In enhanced threat for West and North-West India, the IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over east Gujarat Region for three days from Friday and over Saurashtra and Kutch for two days (Saturday and Sunday) with exceptionally heavy rainfall (≥ 30 cm) over east Gujarat region on Saturday; over east Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday; and south-west Rajasthan on Sunday.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on Friday and Saturday; Saurashtra and Kutch on Friday; West Rajasthan on Saturday; and East Rajasthan on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is likely over West Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday; Uttarakhand on Saturday and Sunday; Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday; Haryana Chandigarh and Delhi for three days from Monday; Punjab on Wednesday; East Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday; East Rajasthan on Monday; Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on Sunday; Gujarat on Monday.
Fishermen alert
Alongside, the IMD has declared a fishermen alert for most parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal for six days due to strong monsoonal winds and wave action. The areas warned of include entire Gujarat coast for five days from Friday; and during off north Konkan coasts for four days on the Arabian Sea side. On the Bay of Brengal side,s the warning extends over south-west Bay and Gulf of Mannar for two days; and adjoining few parts of the Comorin area (Arabian Sea) for five days.
