Wagh Bakri, which procures over six crore kg of tea annually, has set up one of the longest Automated Storage Retrieval Systems (ASRS) near the temple-town of Dakor in Gujarat. This system will meet 25 per cent of the warehousing-needs of the tea-manufacturer.

“The facility at Dakor is home to one of India’s longest ASRS facilities, spanning a length of 200 metres. It will meet more than 25 per cent of our overall warehousing requirements,” Sanjay Singhal, CEO of Wagh Bakri Tea Group, told businessline. Dakor offers a total storage capacity of 2.4 lakh chests, with Automated Storage Retrieval System (ASRS) accounting for 1.8 lakh chests.

“The Dakor ASRS facility is set to deliver substantial savings by reducing rental costs. It will also make the operations more efficient,” Singhal added. Wagh Bakri procures tea between April and December and stocks it in warehouses. “When we buy tea between April to December, we buy thousands of batches and from hundreds of different tea gardens. The robotic systems of ASRS help us to precisely pick the right batch of tea stored in the warehouse and use it for blending and making it into a packed product,” the CEO remarked about the vertical racking system where the tea is stored after procurement.

Pointing out how maximum tea is consumed during winters in India, Singhal said, “We procure six crore kilograms of tea. “Our warehouses reach their maximum capacity in November-December. During that time, we even rent warehouses as we do not get tea in the month of January.”

Wagh Bakri will invest ₹140 crore in Dakor, which will include the new ASRS system and a fully integrated production unit for the Instant Premix Range, including Instant Tea, Vending Premix, and Iced Tea. Currently the tea manufacturer has warehousing facilities across four locations, including Dholka, Kheda, Khandhali (Kheda District, Gujarat), and Dakor. The total storage capacity of these warehouses is over 8.5 lakh chests, including 3.2 lakh chests equipped with ASRS.
