Tata Group-owned Air India has successfully completed the retrofit of its entire legacy A320neo fleet, under its $400 million modernisation programme to upgrade aircraft interiors as well as enhance the overall passenger experience.

Accordingly, the final aircraft under the programme, the twenty-seventh of its kind, has returned to service featuring new cabin interiors and the airline’s new livery.

In all retrofit of 27 A320neo aircraft was completed within one-year period since the programme commenced in September 2024.

Alongside these, 14 newly delivered A320neo aircraft and those integrated following the merger of Vistara into Air India have expanded the fleet to 104 A320 Family aircraft featuring new or upgraded cabin interiors.

With this enhanced narrowbody fleet, Air India now operates 3,024 weekly flights across 82 domestic and short-haul international routes.

Domestically, the modernised aircraft serve high-traffic routes such as Delhi–Mumbai, Delhi–Bengaluru, Delhi–Chennai, and Mumbai–Hyderabad, while internationally they operate on sectors connecting India with Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Riyadh, Jeddah, Singapore, and other key destinations.

According to the airline, the cabin transformation includes a uniform three-class configuration comprising Business, Premium Economy, and Economy Class.

The refurbishment involved the installation of over 4,400 new seats—3,564 in Economy, 648 in Premium Economy, and 216 in Business Class.

Besides, the upgrades saw the use of over 450 metres of premium leather, 15,000 metres of fabric, 5,000 square metres of carpeting, and more than 8,000 kilograms of paint for the new livery.

All seats, the airline said are now equipped with USB-A and USB-C charging ports, allowing passengers to power their devices and access Air India’s ‘Vista Stream’ inflight entertainment service.

“As we mark the end of the first phase of our narrowbody retrofit, we remain committed to offering cabin products of global standards,” said Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India.

In addition to the A320neo retrofit, Air India has begun modernising other segments of its fleet.

Notably, starting from 2026, the airline plans to retrofit 13 legacy A321 aircraft, which will be refitted and repainted alongside the erstwhile Vistara fleet.

Furthermore, the carrier’s widebody retrofit programme for its Boeing 787-8 aircraft is already underway, with the first of 26 aircraft sent to Boeing’s facility in Victorville, California, in July 2025.

The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2027.

Additionally, starting from early 2027, Air India will begin upgrading 13 of its legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, a process expected to conclude by October 2028.
